I'd argue that this is my first real portrait. The girl in the portrait is one of my younger sisters, Ashley. I used colored paper, scissors, tape, glue, and an exacto knife to make this piece. When the teacher first explained the project, he said that one person always cuts themselves with the exacto knife and one person always creates something that blows him away. I was both. I did most of this over winter break, when I returned, I realized that all my classmates used maybe one or two pieces of construction paper to do their subject's hair. As you can see, I cut out each lock of hair because I am insane. I also use several small strips of paper to make the lips and eyebrows too. Most people also didn't do a background. I did my background with the idea of representing my sister, so I made the background cartoonish and whimsical. She also really liked Pokemon back then, so I included a Pikachu.
Unlike the teachers at Colgan, my art teacher didn't stress the completion of artworks...unless he wanted to put them in the 2016 Prince William County Arts Festival. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had received an Award of Excellence on the day of the festival.
